Matthijs de Ligt, born on 12 August 1999 in Leiderdorp, Netherlands, is a highly accomplished Dutch footballer who plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Manchester United and the Netherlands national team.
De Ligt’s journey in professional football began with Ajax’s senior team in September 2016. In a cup game against Willem II, he made an immediate impact by scoring from a corner, becoming the club’s second-youngest goalscorer ever. His rapid rise continued, and on 24 May 2017, he made history by becoming the youngest player ever to appear in a significant European final when he played against Manchester United in the Europa League final. In December 2018, De Ligt’s exceptional talent was recognized when he won the Golden Boy award, making him the first defender to receive this prestigious accolade. The following season, he played a crucial role in helping Ajax secure a domestic double and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
In 2019, De Ligt’s performances earned him a move to Serie A club Juventus, where he continued to shine. Shortly after joining, he was awarded the Kopa Trophy for the world’s best under-21 player of the year. During his time with Juventus, De Ligt helped the team retain the league title in his first season and reclaim the Italian Cup in his second. After three successful years in Italy, he joined Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in 2022, where he once again captured a league title in his first season.
On the international stage, De Ligt made his debut for the Netherlands in 2017 at the age of 17, becoming the youngest player to start for the national team since 1931. He has since represented his country in major tournaments, including UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
