Axel Witsel, born on January 12, 1989, in Liège, Belgium, is a professional footballer renowned for his composure, versatility, and technical prowess. Standing at 1.86 meters, Witsel has been a key figure in midfield for both club and country.
Witsel began his football journey with Standard Liège, where he made his senior debut in 2006 at the age of 17. Over five seasons, he became a pivotal player, helping the club secure two Belgian Pro League titles, two Belgian Super Cups, and a Belgian Cup. His performances earned him the Belgian Golden Shoe in 2008, recognizing him as the league’s best player.
In 2011, Witsel moved to Benfica, where he spent a successful season before joining Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2012 for a €40 million transfer fee. During his time in Russia, he won the Russian Premier League, Russian Cup, and Russian Super Cup, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier midfielder.
In 2017, Witsel made a surprising move to Tianjin Quanjian in the Chinese Super League but returned to Europe in 2018, signing with Borussia Dortmund. At Dortmund, he played a crucial role in their midfield, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2020–21 and the DFL-Supercup in 2019.
